Five New Years Resolutions The Cat Will Approve

Read our tips for cat guardians on how to find balance in the new year with reachable goals by embracing the feline lifestyle.
Whitman, MA (PRWEB) December 30, 2010
The Feline Aficionada shares her top five New Year’s resolutions, with a twist, for cat lovers. According to Cat Fancy magazine January 2011 issue, the three most popular New Year’s resolutions are exercising more, eating healthy and giving up bad habits; these are not at the top of the cats 2011 goal list for sure. The family cat says, “What bad habits? I like drinking water out of the toilet instead of that $100 fountain you bought last year when you thought filtered water would be more healthy for me. Listen, the loo is convenient and it never needs to be refilled.” So, what’s a cat guardian to do? Here’s five Resolutions we think the cat will approve!
1. Take More Cat Naps. Cats sleeps eighteen hours a day and always look refreshed. Instead of exercising so much, give in and share a nap with your feline friend. Your cat will purr you into a deep sleep, it will create a lasting bond between the two of you, and the rest you’ll get could help melt away stress!
2. Cook With Your Catty. Maybe your cat won’t want to wear an apron for this one, although she’d be so cute. This year try healthy new recipe options in your kitchen, you can use organic ingredients too! Some of your all time staple recipes may be altered by simply using less salt, less sugar, or removing onions, etc. Our Feline family favorite is sauteed chicken in olive oil and parsley, with a side of butternut squash, green beans and rice. This will have you and your cats licking your chops after the first try. Not sure just yet? Go online to http://felineaficionada.com/shop/cook-books/ for a list of the best certified cookbook for feline diets. (Make sure to check with your veterinarian before you change diets.)
3. Buy A New Litter box. Some experts say to buy a new litter box every two years. This makes sense, they stay fresher, and disinfect more easily when they’re new. But cat owners are busy people, and two years cat turn into three, or six,…. sometimes ten? No! Oh My. There’s no shame here among us cat people, and 2011 is the perfect time to break the stinky cat litter box habit in your home. There are more cat litter box choices now than ever before. My heart literally skipped a beat, when I saw all the styles recently! Be inspired, you can even match your home decor; your cat will LOVE you!
4. Plant a Garden. Create a cat-friendly indoor garden when you start your garden seedlings this year. Cats enjoy nibbling on fresh Catnip, Cat Grass and Parsley. Spider plants are safe around cats and look very pretty hanging in a sunny window. Ornamental birdcages make useful items to place Catnip pots inside, where cats can chomp on a few branches, without eating the entire plant! Keep plastic covers over your other plant and vegetable seedlings until they can be moved outside and away from your cats. Garden centers can be an excellent resource when it comes to creating a cat-friendly, and safe indoor garden.
5. Find The Purrfect Cat Sitter. Cats are not little dogs, and they need caregivers that can relate to them, comfort them and in some cases offer medical care for them when their owners can not. Finding a cat sitter starts with getting referrals from friends and family, ask how their cats snuggle, play, or otherwise relate to their sitter; search online through a professional pet sitter organizations, like Pet Sitters Associates, or Pet Sitters International. Members of these organizations agree to high standards of care and take their business seriously; then make time to have the potential sitter meet with your felines. Cats are fantastic judges of character and will pick a replacement for you in a blink! Don’t feel bad though, mom and dad are always Top Cat.

Do you have a lot of things to get rid of, piled up near your front door staring at you, either to put in storage or in the recycle bin? Well, alright, my pile has been there for a week or so now, and as I continue to go through my things and organize and down size etc, it seems to be getting bigger.
If you also have some good quality items that you don’t want anymore, then why not consider donating those items to the APCSM’s Annual Yard Sale Benefit Event and help the animals at the shelter-they’ll love you for it!
On Saturday and Sunday September 25th & 26th, I’ll be stopping by to visit the animals, and shop at the Annual Yard Sale & Bake Sale event at the Animal Protection Center of South Eastern MA , the hours for both days are 9am-4pm at the APCSM Adoption Center (1300 West Elm St Ext, Brockton).
APCSM yard sales are well known for their huge and varied selection of items and their bake sales are famous for delicious home-baked treats. All proceeds raised from the sale go directly to providing homeless animals with humane and compassionate care in their time of need.

Dusty Needs A Home

Get to know Dusty- a handsome diabetic cat with a a lot of personality!
My friend is fostering a cat that needs a forever home. -She has been hit with a severe financial hardship and can not care for him anymore. Please consider adopting him or fostering him.
He’s an awesome kitty- with some special needs because he’s diabetic-but other than that he is a wonderful little guy. I’ve met him a number of times-He’s sweet, handsome, just hangs around, he’s layed back, and if I didn’t have six cats already in a 500 sq foot house I would take him myself.
Caring for a cat with diabetes can seem intimidating, but –treating diabetes isn’t that big a deal, I have a diabetic dog and cat and they are easy to care for. My cat Mr. Earl has been diabetic for years. Now he’s on Lantus, and the vet hopes he may eventually be able to get his pancreas to work on it’s own again.
Also- cats have type 2 diabetes, and with good diet, and new medications, they can often have their condition reversed. I think Dusty became diabetic because he was abandoned and had to eat junk food and animals to survive, I’d be happy to speak with anyone about the details just give me a call at 781-447-5489.
Below is a letter from Dusty and attached are pictures. He has a beautiful face- he’s so sweet.
Wanted!!!! A new forever home!
Hello, my name is Dusty. I don’t even know how old I am. Besides age is just a state of mindright? When my foster mom brought me for a checkup the vet believed I’m somewhere between 7 and 10. I’m a very handsome gray tiger kitty with green eyes!
I don’t even know how I ended up where I’m currently living.
I saw my foster mom one day when she was in her backyard and went to her for help. I was very skinny and soooooo hungry. I guess I could say I moved myself in with her and she’s been taking care of me ever since. (Of course she did try to find my home just in case I had become lost.) She advertised in the newspaper, called the Marshfield Animal Control, put ads on Craig’s list etc. I guess my previous owners didn’t want me anymore
Unfortunately, we found out I have diabetes so now I have to get insulin and my vet said my teeth should be cleaned. I am looking for a new home because my current mom can’t afford to get me fixed up so I’ll feel better. She knows I deserve to have all my medical issues attended to.
Do you have a place in your home and heart for me? I’m very sweetand loving and a great conversationalist once I know you. I don’t know how I’ll be with other cats but think I would love to have some siblings. My mom thinks I’ve probably been around dogs before. She’s taken care of some here and I’m very curious, not afraid at all! I bet I’ll adapt very well in a kind, loving family.
Please, please give me a chance.
Love, DustyInquiries please call Cherie at 1-781-974-3889 or post comments and questions below.

Being Web Savvy In An Uncertain Economy
November 9, 2009 by Tonia Evans

As paper media begins to decline in readership and more people are getting their news and information online -pet
businesses benefit by becoming web savvy. Jumping on the web to find a telephone number, directions, hours of operation, and even shopping online have become a way of life for a lot of people, and pet owners are among them.
Nowadays a pet business must have a web presence in order to succeed in reaching the Internet world. A website is an extension of the business, but if having a website is out of the budget, creating a Facebook page is the next best thing -and it’s free.
Another option is to have a lot of online publicity links-ideally from past news stories. Having a web presence puts your business in front of potential clients, connecting to your company is more convenient, and it offers a way to track your marketing efforts, which is the number one goal of a marketing campaign after reaching all your goals. (How will you know if you are reaching your target audience if you can’t track your outreach and publicity efforts?) Certainly it’s about increased sales, etc, but doing marketing is much more than that-it’s about name recognition too.
SouthShorePet.Com offers web savvy pet businesses ways to promote their business and brand through E-Marketing (Online and Email advertising) and the magazine offers a platform for the pet industry to share feature stories and get publicity.
- First-online banner ads are affordable, and can be clicked to reach your website or Facebook Page. In addition, they are easy to budget because they are posted by the month- rather than per click.
- Second, advertisers can reach a targeted pet audience each month by promoting their business with a click-able link-in the E-newsletter.
- Third- Businesses can promote their upcoming activities on the Events Calendar.
- Fourth-the pet industry can share their latest news and press releases.
- Fifth-pet businesses can be listed on the Quick Directory with a click-able link for only $120 a year.
- Finally-Some of our Ads track the number of clicks.
Ask us how you can become a web savvy business and reach pet customers online today!

Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts
announces “Feline Friend-Z”
New non-profit animal shelter extends adoption center hours and offers reduced adoption fees to increase adult cat adoptions Adoption fees will be reduced to $100 for all cats over six months old (a $50 reduction). In addition, all bonded adult pairs (that’s two cats that came to the center together) will also be available at the single adult cat adoption fee of $100.
WHAT: The Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts (APCSM) will be hosting a “Feline Friend-Z”, in an effort to find forever homes for their resident cats and to raise awareness about the newly formed non-profit’s animal shelter. “Feline Friend-Z” will feature reduced adoption fees for adult cats and extended adoption hours while providing an opportunity for the community to visit the shelter, meet the new team and acquaint themselves with the many adult cats that are in the APCSM’s care.
The APCSM is hosting the “Feline Friend-Z” as a means to inform and encourage potential adopters about the benefits of bringing an adult cat into their homes. Often, the playfulness of a kitten overshadows their older felines, but adopting an adult cat allows for a better match of the cat’s personality to the adopters and their lifestyles.
Community members interested in adopting a new friend are encouraged to visit the adoption center and to also visit www.apcsm.org <http://www.apcsm.org/> for more information about the adoption process and available pets.
WHEN: Tuesday October 27th, 4 – 8pm
Thursday October 29th, 2 – 8pm
Friday October 30th, 2 – 4pm
Saturday October 31st, 12 – 4pm
WHERE: Animal Protection Center’s Adoption Center, 1300 West Elm St Ext, Brockton
The Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts (APCSM) is an open admission animal care and adoption facility, with focus on prevention of cruelty to animals, education and helping the community. Each year, over 4,000 animals in the area find themselves with nowhere to turn. The APCSM is committed to providing these homeless animals with humane and compassionate care in their time of need. Paws In The Park Success For “APCSM”
October 19, 2009 by Tonia Evans
Sunday October 11th was a beautiful fall day and the Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts benefited from the sunshine and warm weather, along with hundreds of animal lovers who came out to support the 1st Annual Paws in the Park benefit event, held at Borderland State Park.
Volunteers, and community businesses orchestrated a fun and well-organized event for participants. The APCSM reached their initial goal of $50,000, and with an event as successful as Paws In The Park, they demonstrated that they’re well on their way to getting this new organization off the ground.
The APCSM, recently formed to step in and take over the MSPCA’s closing shelter in Brockton, is a tight knit group of animal experts, local business leaders, animal lovers, and volunteers, and they’re opening their doors-and organization- with an invitation for more people from all backgrounds to step forward and become a part of what they’re hoping to do to help animals.
Paws In The Park attracted dogs of all shapes and sizes, and ages. When I first arrived I recognized Sheena, a beautiful, sweet shelter dog. Sheena is an eleven years old girl who’s been looking for a new home for months-she’s a well behaved, and lovable girl, who is looking for a home without cats or kids. Although tired from the dog walk, she rested and was enjoying being out in the sunshine, laying in the grass, and being around people for the day.
While Sheena took a break for pictures, I got a chance to chat with Megan Plante, who works at the shelter and was there when it was the MSPCA. I was curious to know what happened to the animals in the shelter when the MSPCA’s management ended at the end of September. “Some were transferred,” she said, “Rabbits went to a rabbit rescue, and some animals, like Sheena, stayed in the shelter.”
Afternoon activities at Paws In The Park included a canine agility demonstration. Amy White, a volunteer who helps run agility classes at the shelter, was helping direct dogs owners through the agility course with their dogs. “This is a great way for beginners to see first hand if they’d like to sign up for classes” said Amy. Dogs of all sizes were walking up the double wide planks, and having fun.
The Pet Pantry, a group of teens from the Easton area, were collecting pet food donations and promoting their efforts to help area pets stay in their homes. Jessica Stone said “We collect pet food donations and money, and we buy pet food and supplies and donate them to area food pantries, so families struggling financially can feed their furry friends too!” To join their efforts go to: www.helpfeedpets.org or call 508-587-3752.
The best part of the day was talking with so many interesting people and meeting so many beautiful dogs. For more information on the Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts go to apcsm.org.
